Citizens Advice Scotland launches British Sign Language video relay service for Universal Credit support
Deaf Action is delighted to share that Citizens Advice Scotland has launched a brand-new British Sign Language Video Relay Service for their Help to Claim Universal Credit service. This initiative ensures that deaf BSL users can access free, independent, and confidential advice when applying for Universal Credit.
What is the Help to Claim service?
The Help to Claim service provides tailored support for people applying for Universal Credit. Whether you are transitioning from legacy benefits due to the government’s managed migration process or making a first-time claim, Citizens Advice Scotland can help you:
- Check eligibility for Universal Credit payments.
- Receive step-by-step guidance to complete your application.
- Prepare for your first Job Centre appointment.
- Ensure your first payment is correct.
This service is available until the first full and correct Universal Credit payment is received.
How does the BSL video relay service work?
CAS has launched a Video Relay Service that allows deaf BSL users to connect with an interpreter instantly, without needing to book an appointment. The interpreter will then relay the conversation to a Citizens Advice adviser, ensuring seamless access to support.
This is a significant step in making Universal Credit advice more accessible and inclusive for the deaf community. The service can be accessed through the Citizens Advice Scotland website, providing BSL users with equal access to essential financial support.
