Deaf Action attends launch of major new report on Deaf and deafblind access to health and social care
On 27 November, members of our team travelled to London to attend the official launch of Locked Out: Exclusion of deaf and deafblind BSL users from health and social care in the UK.
The launch took place at the Houses of Parliament and brought together organisations, professionals and advocates from across the UK who work in health and social care with deaf and deafblind people.
Matthew, Liz, and Richard (who also served on the BSL Advisory Board), represented Deaf Action at the event. The launch provided an important opportunity to hear directly from those involved in developing the report, as well as to engage with other organisations working to improve deaf access across the country.
The Locked Out report highlights the persistent barriers that BSL users face in accessing health and social care, including difficulties booking appointments, lack of appropriate communication support, inaccessible digital systems and gaps in specialist services. It also sets out twelve essential priorities for change, calling for action to remove these barriers and to ensure that deaf and deafblind people receive equitable, accessible care.
As an organisation committed to improving access, inclusion and rights for deaf people, we welcome the publication of this report and the platform it provides for national change.
The full report is available in both BSL and English. You can watch or read it here.
