Hands showing BSL sign for interpreter

We’re thrilled to announce that Heriot Watt University will be sponsoring this year’s Edinburgh Deaf Festival.

As the festival’s Interpreting Sponsor, Heriot Watt will be providing British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters for various performances and events across Edinburgh’s festivals this summer.

Heriot-Watt University has had a long-standing commitment to support BSL teaching and the training of BSL/English interpreters. In 2022, Deaf Action and Heriot Watt University announced a Memorandum of Understanding, committing to supporting each other through knowledge sharing, whilst providing opportunities for interpreters in training.

Dr Robert Adam, Head of the BSL section in the Department of Languages & Intercultural Studies at Heriot-Watt, said of the news: “We are proud to be a deaf and BSL-friendly University and are thrilled to be supporting the second annual Edinburgh Deaf Festival. The line-up of performers and events is impressive and we’re excited to be helping to make that talent more accessible to all.”

Thank you to Heriot Watt for this incredible support. Together we’re making the festival season more accessible for deaf people.

Edinburgh Deaf Festival is a celebration of deaf culture, language and heritage, taking place from 11 to 20 August 2023. Find out more at the Edinburgh Deaf Festival website.
