Join us for our International Week of Deaf People Coffee Morning
We’re celebrating International Week of Deaf People with a special coffee morning at Blackwood Cafe & Bar, and everyone is welcome to come along.

Cost: Free
Drop in for a relaxed morning with tea, coffee and biscuits, all free, and enjoy a chance to catch up with friends, meet new people and spend some time with the Deaf Action team. Our staff will be around throughout the morning too, so if you have any questions about Deaf Action or want to find out more about any of our services, just come and have a chat.
There’s no need to book. Just turn up.
What is International Week of Deaf People?
International Week of Deaf People takes place every September and brings deaf communities together across the world to celebrate deaf people, sign languages, culture and human rights.
It is led by the World Federation of the Deaf and has been celebrated internationally since 1958.
This year’s theme is “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights”, with each day of the week focusing on a different issue affecting deaf people.
The theme for Thursday 24 September is “No Access Without National Sign Language”, recognising the vital role that national sign languages play in making sure deaf people can access information, services and everyday life on an equal basis.
For us, that includes continuing to champion British Sign Language and the right of deaf people to access their communities, services and opportunities in their own language.

Wear blue
If you’re coming along, we’d love you to wear something blue too.
Blue is used around the world during International Week of Deaf People as part of the World Federation of the Deaf’s campaign to shine a light on sign languages and deaf communities. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy. A blue top, scarf, jumper or even a small splash of blue is perfect.
So come along, grab a cuppa and a biscuit, and join us for a friendly morning at Blackwood Cafe & Bar.
