Advocating for deaf children in education

Our School Outreach Programme is designed to ensure that deaf young people have access to the information, resources, and support they need to develop essential life skills. We work directly with schools that have deaf units and those where there may be only one deaf student, ensuring that every deaf pupil receives the guidance they need to thrive.

Supporting deaf pupils

We believe that every deaf young person should have the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Our team provides tailored support to help deaf students succeed academically, develop confidence, and gain independence on par with their hearing peers. By working closely with schools, we ensure that deaf pupils are fully included in their education and wider school experience. We also advocate for their rights, ensuring they have equal access to information and learning.

Our support includes:

  • One-on-one and group sessions to provide personalised guidance, helping deaf students develop self-advocacy skills, build resilience, and grow their confidence.
  • Collaboration with teachers and school staff to ensure that learning environments are accessible and inclusive, offering advice on best practices for communication and support strategies.
  • Assisting with Individualised Education Programmes (IEPs) and advocating for necessary adjustments, including access to interpreters, note-takers, and assistive technology.
  • Providing deaf awareness training for schools, helping staff and peers understand the challenges faced by deaf students and fostering a more inclusive environment.
  • Helping parents and guardians navigate the education system, ensuring they are informed and empowered to advocate for their child’s needs.

We work alongside deaf students, schools, and families to break down barriers to education and ensure that every deaf young person has the same opportunities as their hearing peers.
